"The play is melodramatic and down to the marks in cliches, but it is treated with respect and therein lies some of the beauty that can be found in nostalgia. The story is about - oy, it's too complicated to simplify - a miller with son and daughter. The son falls in love with the maid, a Russian non-Jewish peasant, and the daughter is in love with the young, impoverished rabbi but is betrothed, by her uncaring father, to the wastrel son of a rich squire. Things work out, as they usually do in this category of Yiddish theater, and everyone ends up in the proper arms by the time the finale catches up with the plot.
The two stars are Monica Tesler, as the maid, and David Montefiore, as the rabbi. Miss Tesler has robust good looks, a twinkling eye, a strong personality and sense of the comic, and a voice that is quite melodious to the ear, a voice in the deep, emotional style of contemporary Israeli pop singers. Mr. Montefiore has a powerful operatic tenor that has the benefit of a touch of Yiddishkeit, or Jewishness."
