LILY TOMLIN in "APPEARING NITELY" WINDOW CARD 1977
"Appearing Nitely" marked Tomlin's Broadway debut and she made the most of it. With her own voice, she created 15 different characters each with its own voice. Sometimes two or three of these vocal characterizations appeared on stage at the same time with Tomlin switching back and forth on a dime from one character's voice to another. And "appeared" is the right word because, even though these characters were purely vocal creations, they were for her audiences palpable apparitions, if there is such a thing. Tomlin's humor is among the most intelligent of our generation. Her characters either personally demonstrate the foibles of modern culture or criticize it outright. Either way, the audience gets it. Tomlin says her characters are folks who "set out to improve the world but along the way, the world erodes their determination. Once they've tried to change the world, they realize it's easier to change your mind." Sad but true. And that's what the audience gets -- along with zingers, one-liners, wry observations, hilarious situations, amusing anecdotes and, as the saying goes: a laugh a minute.This 14x22" window card is in very good condition with a few scuff marks around the edges, especially at the corners. And a few crossing inconspicuously into the image. (Please see photographs.) The colorful illustration and the image of Tomlin herself are spot-on and vigorously inviting to the eye. LILY TOMLIN has signed the card very neatly and legibly in silver ink directly below the show's title. An excellent souvenir of a 44 year-old landmark in the extraordinary career of one of our most creative humorists. And, by the way, a Kennedy Center honoree.
